Drones in Oil & Gas

Some industrial and oil field projects are unique, and your clients and customers know exactly what the end product is. However, sometimes they miss out on the entire scope of the project. Thats where an aerial photo or video of your oil field rig or industrial site can be an excellent way to present your work to your clients and investors.

Project: Flare Stack Inspection

Drone Flare Stack Inspection

After an extreme windstorm, our client requested that we inspect their flare stack for any possible damage. It was suspected that something had broken loose, however from the ground the location could not be pinpointed.

During the inspection, we were able to provide a real time view of the stack in order to pinpoint the location. Upon closer look, we discovered instead of the initially suspected area, a different location had been damaged.

Upon completion of the inspection, we further examined the high resolution photos and 4K video to pinpoint the location. Based on the drone’s data, our client was able to determine that it was a simple fix, and a costly stack shutdown wouldn’t be necessary. This flare stack inspection via drone created significant cost savings for our client, and ensured that none of their employees would unnecessarily be put in danger.

Project: Fracking Aerial Video

Frac, fracking, or hydraulic fracturing is a well stimulation technique in which rock is fractured by a pressurized liquid. The injection of fracking fluid into a wellbore results in access to natural gas, petroleum, and brine.

The goal of this project was to show the scale and cleanliness of the fracking operation in northwestern Alberta. It was used by our client for marketing purposes, as well as in an investor presentation.

Benefits of drones in the oilfield

  • Safely inspect hazardous areas from a safe distance
  • Wide angle to get a grasp on the entire area
  • Close ups of the specific piece of land, building, rig or project
  • Show out of town clients that are unfamiliar with the location what it’s really like
  • Angles and altitudes that aren’t achievable with traditional aircraft
  • UAV photography is green and has little to no carbon footprint
